One
of the most outstanding aspects of Huntington
Hospital’s Don Monti Cancer
Center is its commitment to education. At the
core of this strive for knowledge and for the
best possible outcomes for all patients, is a
dynamic Tumor Board. At these
weekly conferences, physicians who deal with
cancer patients – surgeons, medical oncologists,
radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, urologists,
internists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists,
and others—gather to learn about the latest
breakthroughs in cancer care, as well as to present
and discuss cases.
Medical advances are being made at a dizzying
rate. The frequency of these professional educational
meetings at Huntington Hospital permits participants
to stay abreast of the latest breakthroughs in
cancer diagnosis and treatment. The multidisciplinary
nature of these meetings means that every participant
brings something different to the discussion
table. Oncology nurses, a vital link in the continuum
of care for cancer patients, are also represented
at these meetings, along with the oncology social
worker and representatives from the Women's Health
Center and the Dietary Department.
In addition to the weekly Tumor Board, there
is also a weekly Multidisciplinary Thoracic
Oncology Program (MTOP) meeting and
a bimonthly Cancer Committee meeting. The Cancer
Committee is a group of healthcare professionals
whose purpose is to ensure that the hospital's
cancer program maintains high standards for quality
and responsiveness to community needs. And because
Huntington Hospital is part of the North Shore
Long Island Jewish Health System, our staff members
are active participants in a monthly Breast
Cancer Tumor Board that is carried across
the Health System via an interactive Distance
Learning Network.
Huntington Hospital also offers a Breast
Health Forum twice a year which is
free and open to the public. A panel of experts
moderated by the Chief of the Department of
Oncology are available to answer questions.
Lastly, a computer with internet access is
located on the oncology unit in the living/dining
lounge. Patients and their families are encouraged
to use the internet to keep abreast of the latest
information about their conditions.
