Cardiac Services Program

Huntington Hospital offers a full spectrum of advanced cardiac diagnostic testing and intervention in our dedicated Cardiac Services Unit. This comprehensive program, which occupies an attractive new third floor wing, is the result of a highly successful collaboration among our skilled cardiologists, Huntington Hospital and the North Shore –Long Island Jewish Health System.

The cardiac catheterization laboratory provides the technology needed to accurately diagnose coronary and valvular heart disease and to measure critical aspects of heart function. For the patient who requires heart surgery or related interventions, our physicians and nurses are committed to ensuring seamless continuity between the community setting and North Shore – LIJ tertiary cardiac resources.

Emergency cardiac intervention. Huntington Hospital is one of fifteen New York State hospitals participating in a program aimed at ensuring prompt, accurate treatment for heart attack victims, utilizing the most advanced techniques for opening blocked coronary arteries. An expert team of interventional cardiologists, nurses and technicians perform primary angioplasty and coronary stent insertion twenty four hours a day under a protocol that speeds diagnosis and minimizes door-to-catheter time. The result is better outcomes and faster recovery.

All of our cardiac catheterization procedures are performed by board-certified interventional cardiologists practicing in our community. Many of these physicians also perform these procedures at the Manhasset and Long Island Jewish campuses of the North Shore –LIJ Health System. Consistent with our philosophy of ongoing growth and improvement, plans are currently underway to initiate a wider range of procedures including elective angioplasty, peripheral artery procedures and interventions.

The Arrhythmia Service provides diagnosis and treatment for patients with a wide variety of heart disorders that result in abnormal cardiac function. Program director Dr. Paul Maccaro, carries Huntington Hospital’s vision of compassion and clinical excellence to the bedside, with the assistance of our highly specialized staff of nurses and technicians. Procedures include pacemaker and ICD (intra-cardiac defibrillator) insertion, cardiac resynchronization, and aberrant pathway ablation. Recognizing the hospital’s role in promoting community wellness, the Arrhythmia Service also has established a program of public access defibrillation for many organizations and sites across the Huntington community.

Other cardiac procedures performed in the Cardiac Services Unit include:

  • cardioversion
  • tilt table studies
  • stress echocardiography
  • transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)
