The nursing staff of Huntington Hospital’s
Endoscopy Suite embraces the spiritual as well as
the physical needs of each patient. All steps in
the admission, procedural, recovery and discharge
process are integrated to offer an efficient, safe
and comfortable experience. The nursing staff proudly
offers a calm, quiet and organized Endoscopy Suite,
complete with soothing music, warm blankets, and
relaxation TV. Well trained in recognizing and meeting
the special needs of their many elderly patients,
endoscopy nurses embrace the opportunity to learn
from their wisdom.
In addition to endoscopy, available procedures include
balloon dilatation, colonoscopy, polypectomy, and endoscopic
ultrasound, which is the latest in endoscopic technology.
Nurses working in this specialty area must meet basic
cardiac requirements as well as specific sedation and
analgesia requirements. Endoscopy nurses are responsible
for patient education, patient pre-procedure assessment,
starting IV’s, patient monitoring, assisting
physicians, and caring for patients in the recovery
area. As part of a wellness promotion, the nursing
staff also discusses with patients and their families
such issues as nutrition, stress management, healthful
life style choices, and exercise. In addition,
nurses are responsible for the follow-up phone calls
to make sure that patients are recuperating comfortably
at home.
