5 NORTH

The Psychiatric Unit provides a safe, protective
environment for the treatment and recovery of
acutely ill psychiatric patients. It is
a 21-bed, voluntary, primarily short-term, acute
care setting for adolescents and adults. Length
of stay is approximately 14 days, however some
patients benefit from longer or shorter stays.
The approach to treatment is interdisciplinary. Registered
Nurses and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners are
key members of the caring, professional staff
which also includes Psychiatrists, Licensed Psychiatric
Social Workers, and Art and Activity Therapists.
Individual, group, and family therapy are provided
by the attending psychiatrist and professional
staff. The attending psychiatrist may prescribe
antipsychotic, antidepressant, anti-anxiety,
or mood stabilizing medication individually or
in combination, as indicated, for the treatment
of a particular disorder or set of symptoms.
A close liaison is maintained with local agencies
and mental health providers who offer post discharge
services for patients.
