2 SOUTHWEST, 5 EAST, 5 SOUTH
AND 2 SOUTH
2 SOUTHWEST

“Let our family take care of yours” is
the mantra of the nursing staff on 2 Southwest, a medical/surgical
unit. The nursing staff is dedicated to providing 24-hour
quality care to patients and their family members in
a safe, healing, harm-free environment. The staff encourages
participation of the patient’s support network
and embraces them as part of the healthcare team. Family
members are encouraged to attend interdisciplinary
rounds twice per week and they have access to patient
care items on the unit’s “family participation
carts” located in the hallway.
Other features of this unit include:
- open visiting hours with an invitation to family
members to room in (sleep overnight alongside their
loved one);
- “Quiet Hours” of relaxation daily from
2:00 to 4:00 PM with lavender aromatherapy;
- specific goals identified on communication boards
posted in every room; and
- strict adherence to a falls reduction policy.
The unique “Rainbow Champions” program
on 2 Southwest features staff members who have expertise,
training, and special interest in a healthcare topic
which they promote on the unit.

5 EAST

This 31-bed medical/surgical unit is patient-focused
with a strong emphasis on patient safety. Involvement
of the patient and family in the plan of care is a
top priority of the nursing staff, resulting in positive
patient outcomes.
The nursing staff provides quality care to a diverse
population of acute and chronically ill patients. With
an interdisciplinary approach involving physicians,
physical therapists, dieticians, social workers, and
hospitalists, the team is able to provide excellence
in service. The nurses on this unit are also
proficient in performing Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal
Dialysis (CAPD), and instruct patients and their families
on this technique.
In addition, the unit is one of Huntington’s
Stroke Recovery Units, and the nursing staff has had
the additional education in caring for this very special
patient population.

5 SOUTH

Patient-centered quality care is the goal of the nursing
staff on 5 South, a 30-bed medical/surgical unit. Family
participation is encouraged on this unit which supports
open visiting hours. This means that close family members
may visit the patient at any time, day or night. A “quiet
time” for patients is encouraged each day between
3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
The nursing staff honors the whole person and his
or her family and respects the individual values and
choices of every patient. Confidentiality and the right
to privacy are policies adhered to at all times.
The nursing care team continually strives for excellence.
Many registered nurses in the unit are certified in
medical-surgical nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing
Center.

2 SOUTH

Two-South is an additional medical/surgical unit recently
opened to accommodate the large volume of patients
admitted to Huntington Hospital through the Emergency
Department. The 12-bed unit includes isolation capability.
Plans are currently underway to convert some of these
beds to private rooms.
Similar to the other medical/surgical units at Huntington
Hospital, family-centered quality nursing care, provided
to patients and their family members in a safe, healing,
harm-free environment, is the goal of the staff on
this unit. The nursing staff encourages participation
of the patient’s support network and embraces
them as part of the healthcare team.
The 2-South nursing team also has plans to mirror
the “Rainbow of Champions” program begun
on 2-Southwest which features staff members who have
expertise, training, and special interest in a healthcare
topic which they promote on the unit.
Nurses on 2-South are certified in Basic Life Support
(BLS) and many have additional certifications as well.
