Preparing for Your Baby

It’s your baby. Of course you want the very best. That’s why our experience gives you peace of mind. With nearly 1,600 deliveries each year, an expert staff of obstetricians, pediatricians, neonatologists, and nurses, the warmth and personalized care that only a community hospital can provide, plus the resources of Long Island’s largest and most well-respected health system, Huntington Hospital provides a safe and welcoming environment for new babies and their families.

And to reassure you even more, a neonatologist is on site 24 hours a day and attends all Cesarean section births. Beyond this, we offer our maternity patients a full range of free instructional classes, all aimed toward making the birth of your child the rich and rewarding experience it should be. We want you to feel relaxed and at home, to feel the warmth and friendliness that has long been our hallmark. But most of all, we want you to feel the confidence that comes from knowing that you're in the best possible hands for the most important time of your life.

Antepartum Care (Prenatal Testing)

Antepartum testing services provided in the hospital’s Women's Health Center are designed to help manage complicated and high-risk pregnancies. Many women fit into this category. The term "high-risk" is not in itself a cause for alarm. It merely means that because of your own medical history, difficulties in a prior pregnancy or a problem with your current pregnancy, you will need to be monitored in special ways to give you the best chance to have a healthy baby. Women with diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease - as well as women who are expecting more than one baby - are among those who need specialized care during pregnancy.

At the center, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist works with a multidisciplinary team of professionals to provide the most comprehensive care available. This physician has advanced knowledge in the obstetrical, medical, and surgical complications of pregnancy and their effects on both you and your baby. Our staff is trained in the latest diagnostic and treatment methods, including ultrasound. The center is equipped with state-of-the-art technology that provides the most accurate information possible to our professionals and your obstetrician.

You may be asked to undergo certain tests to provide your obstetrician with additional data. Your partner is welcome to stay with you during all procedures. After the tests are completed, all information will be conveyed to your obstetrician. If additional tests are needed, they will be scheduled for you.

Testing services include:
  • Comprehensive Ultrasound
  • Non-Stress Test (NST)
  • Fetal Biophysical Profile (BPP)

Diabetes in Pregnancy Counseling and Education Program

The mission of our Diabetes in Pregnancy Counseling and Education Program is to help women who have diabetes during pregnancy deliver a healthy baby. Our multidisciplinary team consists of a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, a nurse clinician, and a registered dietician. This team works closely with patients and their referring physicians to design individualized treatment plans. Our diabetes educators teach blood glucose monitoring, nutritional and exercise guidelines, fetal movement counts, and when needed, insulin administration techniques. For women with preexisting diabetes, our program offers counseling before pregnancy occurs.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call The Women's Health Center at Huntington Hospital at (631) 351-2564.
