Twenty-five
million Americans are affected by osteoporosis, a disease
characterized by loss of bone density. Osteoporosis can cause
bones to become fragile to the point of breaking. Hip and
spine fractures are among the more common and serious osteoporosis-related
breaks. Fortunately, this disease can be prevented and treated
if detected early.
BONE
DENSITY SCREENING
Bone density screening is the most reliable way to confirm
osteoporosis. At Huntington Hospital's Women's Health Center,
the test is fast, safe, and painless. Similar to a low-dose
X-ray, bone densitometry measures bone density of the hip
and spine, as recommended by the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
The examination is performed by a specially trained, licensed
radiologic technologist. Results are provided promptly to
your physician.
RISK
FACTORS
There are numerous factors that can increase your risk for
osteoporosis.
They include:
. being female
. a family history of osteoporosis
. a small frame
. being Caucasian or Asian
. low body weight
. low dietary calcium intake
. high alcohol or caffeine consumption
. high intake of vitamin A or D
. chronic dieting
. smoking
. physical inactivity
. use of certain medications
Speak with your physician about your risks and to find out
if you could benefit from a bone density exam at the Women's
Health Center. Osteoporosis screening is reimbursable under
Medicare and many other insurance plans.
