PSYCHOSOCIAL COUNSELING SERVICES

PATHWAYS TO HEALING

Huntington Hospital's Oncology Support Services Program provides ongoing psychosocial support to oncology patients and their families.

After a diagnosis of cancer, many patients experience some type of psychosocial distress. Many family members experience similar responses. Distress is an unpleasant experience of emotional, psychological, social, or spiritual nature that interferes with the ability to cope with treatment.

A mental health nurse practitioner provides individual and family counseling services. These services offer an avenue for expressing feelings and a method for coping with stress. In a supportive and confidential environment, patients and families can gain insight into their feelings and relief from their distress.

The primary goals of counseling are:

  • relief from symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • improved quality of life
  • enhanced communication among family members
  • more effective pain relief
  • education regarding practical stress management techniques including guided imagery and meditation
  • facilitation of shared decision making
  • bereavement support
