Why
a Discussion Group?
After a diagnosis of cancer, patients may experience
a range of responses, including fear, anger, and uncertainty.
Modeled on the American Cancer Society's "Man-to-Man"
Program, the Prostate Cancer Discussion Group at Huntington
Hospital was developed to provide men and their partners
with the information they need to effectively cope with
their disease.
What
Happens at Meetings?
The group meets monthly throughout
the year. Each
meeting features a presentation by a guest speaker on
a specific topic related to prostate cancer diagnosis,
treatment, or quality-of-life issues. Prostate cancer
patients, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals
actively participate in meetings so that relevant information
can be shared. Men and their partners are encouraged
to openly discuss
their concerns and exchange solutions to common problems.
Meetings are
free and open to any member of the community with prostate
cancer. Partners are welcome to attend. Topics are announced
in advance for each meeting; participants may attend
every meeting, or select those that interest them.
Who
Coordinates the Program?
Offered under the auspices of Huntington
Hospital's Don Monti Cancer Center, the Prostate Cancer
Discussion Group is coordinated by two registered nurses
together with a prostate cancer patient. Physicians
and other healthcare personnel with a wide range of
expertise make presentations and interact with group
members on a regular basis.
